Project Overview
Project Overview
The Wastaway App is a solution-driven application designed to boost public interest in more effective waste management.
Problem Background
Problem Background
The environment serves as the habitat, resource space, and integral backdrop where living organisms, especially humans with their complex roles and responsibilities, coexist. Preserving this environment is crucial for mankind, and pollution, particularly from accumulated waste, is a significant concern. Pollution stems from various sources, and one of the contributors is the accumulation of waste. Proper waste management is essential to counteract environmental degradation caused by waste buildup. Although waste processing methods exist and are being applied, their effectiveness is hindered by the mixing of various types of waste, making it challenging to reprocess them. Consequently, waste accumulates in landfills, posing a threat to the environment and public health. Burning waste is not a viable solution due to its potential harm.

The significance of efficient and proper waste management cannot be overstated. While waste generation is inevitable, its responsible handling is paramount. In Malang city alone, with a population of 887,443 in 2017, the daily waste production amounted to approximately 709,954 kg. To put this into perspective, envision the weight of 700 Toyota Avanza cars. This daily waste is transported to the final processing site or landfill. Unfortunately, many landfills in Malang have reached their capacity, rendering them inactive. Even the active ones are expected to reach their limits soon due to prolonged sorting processes caused by the mixed nature of waste. The crucial point is that landfills are designed to accommodate non-recyclable residual waste, making the sorting process at the landfill itself time-consuming.

To avoid the overflow and eventual closure of landfills, waste segregation at the source becomes imperative. Categorizing and sorting waste before disposal aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13, which addresses climate action. Subgoal 13.3 emphasizes the need to enhance education, awareness, and capacity-building related to climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction, and early warning systems. The lack of motivation and awareness among individuals is a significant concern in achieving these goals.

In our quest to address the challenges posed by improper waste management, we adopt a Design Thinking approach. This methodology guides our design process, ensuring a human-centered and innovative solution. Let's walk through the key stages we followed in crafting our design:

Emphatise Phase
Emphatise Phase
In the "Empathize" phase, we chatted with potential users, gathering their thoughts and feelings. To really understand them, we created an "empathy map," a guide to their desires and challenges. Now, armed with this map, we're not just designing a solution; we're crafting an experience. It's like having a compass that ensures every step resonates with our users' needs. Here's to creating something that not only solves a problem but also speaks to the soul of our users.

Define Phase
Define Phase
After completing our research, in the "Define" stage, we gathered and formulated responses and issues from potential users. We carefully crafted problem statements to encapsulate the challenges articulated by our users. This process led to the creation of several user personas, giving us a deeper understanding of our audience.
By distilling the input from our users into clear problem statements and personifying their experiences through personas, we've taken a significant step in empathizing with their needs. These user personas serve as vivid representations, guiding our design decisions to ensure our solution addresses the real-life challenges faced by the diverse individuals we aim to serve.

Testing Phase
Usability testing aids us in evaluating the Wasteaway application, ensuring it is user-friendly and easily comprehensible. This testing process also helps validate whether our ideas and solutions hit the mark. The results from testing with 6 users provided new insights regarding the user interface layout, which we promptly addressed to enhance user convenience. For the Wasteaway App testing, we employed the Maze usability testing tool. Maze allowed us to run the application prototype with multiple scenarios, simultaneously collecting data on user interactions for analysis.
